    Dear Sara,

Just read your piece on alcohol addiction. At 72 I’ve quit drinking several times, sometimes for years. On the last go-round I really thought I had beaten the demon and could be a moderate two a day drinker. But when my wife killed herself, it was like the flood gates opened. After that, Merlot kept me company, comforted me, entertained me, was my best friend – always there for me. Years passed and at 750ml per day, it started to seem unsustainable, ie. I knew it would eventually kill me. So much of life is habit. I knew if I could break the spell, even briefly, I could be free. In preparation for a colonoscopy, I had to change my diet for 5 days – no alcohol. It was long enough to convince me I wouldn’t die for lack of a drink. Every day of 7 months is further proof. Choosing the right day to make your escape is key.

    Best regards,
    Glenn Scott
